Iran’s Supreme National Security Council will take the final call on whether to close the strategic Strait of Hormuz , Press TV reported on Sunday, following approval from the Iranian parliament.
According to Reuters report, the move, if implemented, could severely disrupt global energy markets , as nearly 20% of the world’s oil and gas supply passes through the narrow waterway.
While a closure has not yet been confirmed, it remains a serious possibility amid growing regional tensions.
“The closure of the strait is on the agenda and will be done whenever necessary,” said Iranian lawmaker and Revolutionary Guards Commander Esmail Kosari , speaking to the Young Journalist Club on Sunday.
The proposal follows days of escalating conflict between Iran, Israel, and the United States, including US airstrikes on key Iranian nuclear facilities on Sunday.
The Strait of Hormuz, located between the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman, is a vital global trade route, and any disruption could lead to a spike in oil prices and international maritime tensions.
