United States President Donald Trump on Sunday hailed the American airstrikes on Iranian nuclear facilities, claiming the bunker-buster bombs went through the targets "like absolute butter".
Trump repeated his Iran’s nuclear program "obliterated" claim, boasting that three key nuclear sites, including the heavily fortified Fordo facility, had been completely destroyed.
“That meant the end to their nuclear ambitions, at least for a period of time. The bomb went through it like it was butter, like it was absolute butter,” he said, describing the precision strike on Fordo. “It’s just thousands of tons of rock in that room right now. The whole place was just destroyed,” Trump told Fox News.
The remarks came amid swirling questions about whether the strikes were as effective as was claimed by Washington.
Multiple intelligence assessments have reportedly cast doubt on the true damage inflicted, with some reports suggesting that Iran may have moved enriched uranium out of the Fordo facility prior to the bombings, possibly to undisclosed locations unknown to US intelligence.
Trump rejected that possibility outright, saying: “I think first it was very hard to do. It’s very dangerous to do. It’s very heavy, very, very heavy. It’s a very hard thing to do. Plus, we didn’t give much notice because they didn’t know we were coming until just then"
He added that Iran had been “weeks away” from acquiring a nuclear weapon before the strikes and that the current state of its program is in ruins. “The last thing they want to do right now is think about nuclear. They have to put themselves back into condition and shape,” he said.
Trump also pushed back hard against the leaks about the intelligence reports, calling for the prosecution of those responsible. “You tell the reporter 'national security,’ who gave it? You have to do that. And I suspect we’ll be doing things like that,” he said.
In the same interview, the US president claimed momentum was building for more Arab nations to join the Abraham Accords, signalling expanding diplomatic normalisation with Israel.
