Businesswoman Natasha Poonawalla is only Indian guest invited to the ceremony

A wedding amid protests

The choice of city for the wedding of Bezos, one of the richest individuals in the world, and Sanchez, has divided Venice, with some activists protesting it as an "exploitation" of the city by the billionaire while ordinary residents suffer from over-tourism, high housing costs and the constant threat of climate-induced flooding.

A protest by a group called Extinction Rebellion in St. Mark's Square featured a masked bride and groom - impersonating Bezos and Sanchez - and people holding posters decrying climate change and income inequalities.

However, Luca Zaia, the governor of Veneto region of which Venice is the capital, has strongly defended the wedding, saying it would be an "economic and reputational boon" for the city known for its waterways.
