Ekta Nagar , Narmada district: Women empowerment in the police and paramilitary forces will be in the spotlight during this year’s Rashtriya Ekta Diwas parade here on October 31, to be presided over by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Sporting crisp uniforms, the women officers will lead marching contingents of all the participating state police and Central paramilitary forces, save NSG. At the front of the parade will be two Gujarat-cadre women IPS officers who will give salute to the PM and guide the parade with their booming voice commands.
The women officers have been lodged over the last 1.5 months on common premises, first in Gandhinagar and then Ekta Nagar. They have trained and practiced hard for their cherished moment — an opportunity to lead the march past and give salute to the Prime Minister who, as a great votary of women empowerment, has pushed hard for raising the strength and profile of women in the police forces.
On October 31, Gujarat cadre woman IPS officers, Suman Nala of 2021 batch and Simran Bharadwaj of 2022 batch, will make history by leading the Ekta Diwas parade.
Speaking to TOI, Suman said the parade is an extra-special occasion for her as her husband, IPS officer Om Prakash, had led the same parade in 2020, when she was still studying for the Civil Services Exam. “On Oct 31, our three-year-old daughter Pranavi will watch me lead the Ekta Diwas parade, on TV from my parents’ home in Rajasthan. I have left her under my parents’ care,” she told TOI.
Simran told TOI that it took her loads of practice to channel force and authority into her commands. “My throat was already sore during the full dress rehearsal today. I hope my voice will hold till Oct 31.. Rendering salute to the PM is a dream come true for me,” she said.
Sriveda Anand, an Andhra Pradesh police officer posted in West Godavari district, said she had last led the passing out parade at her academy. “My husband, who works in the High Court, has been looking after my three-year daughter Maira. They are now here to watch me lead the Andhra Pradesh police contingent,” she said, beaming with pride.
Interestingly, the young women officers from all over the country — an inspiring picture of professionalism and discipline in the field — have also been bonding off-duty at their common lodging spaces over the past one and a half months.
Aparna O from Kerala Police shared: “Not only does this one-of-a-kind gathering of women personnel from different states present us with a rare opportunity to make direct contact but it also helps us share best practices. We have been relishing one another’s state cuisines since each contingent has brought its own cooks; and we have learnt about the country’s varied culture and traditions. We have together done sightseeing tours in Gujarat and will go back with new friends and fond memories”.
A male police personnel, who did not want to be named, welcomed the initiative to have women lead the marching contingents. “They are perfectionists and can be tougher disciplinarians than men,” he conceded. Dr Vandana Karkhele, who is leading the Maharashtra police contingent, said one has to give it all to have a contingent of 144 personnel marching perfectly in sync.
