NEW DELHI: AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi on Thursday took a dig at the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government after US President Donald Trump announced a 25 per cent tariff on India and said it is "sad to see the ruling administration being bullied by a buffoon-in-chief in the White House."
Trump, criticising India's trade practices on the Truth Social platform, announced a 25 per cent tariff and said that the country imposes "the most strenuous and obnoxious non-monetary Trade Barriers of any Country."
Taking a swipe at PM Modi, Owaisi questioned his silence, and is this Trump's announcement is "56-inch chest" promised or the nation has to wait for tariff to reach 56%.
"Trump has announced that Indian exports will now come with a 25% tariff. It’s sad to see my country’s government being bullied by a buffoon-in-chief in the White House. This tariff will come with a vague “penalty” for trading with Russia. India is independent sovereign country. Not a vassal state that gives salami in the Emperor’s court. These measures are a clear and deliberate attack on our sovereignty and economic standing," Owaisi said in a post on X.
He also said that the tariff will hit Indian MSMEs, manufacturers, IT firms, service providers, and even our farmers.
"I’ve raised the issue of rising hostile trade practices against India in Parliament for years. These tariffs will hit Indian MSMEs, manufacturers, IT firms, service providers, and even our farmers. They’ll deter FDI, damage exports, and hurt jobs. While Japan will pay 15%, Vietnam will pay 20% and Indonesia has a tariff of 19%. This will hit India’s competitive advantage for US exports. What’s worse is our own @narendramodi’s silence. Is this the “56-inch chest” we were promised? Or will we only see it if Trump raises tariffs to 56%?" he added.
Trump's 25% announcement has sparked the flame in political sphere, triggering opposition to raise question in the Parliament.
Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge called out PM Modi's “Maun Vrat” in the Parliament over Operation Sindoor and said that this is a "severe blow to India's National Policy of Strategic Autonomy".
"Modi ji had observed a “Maun Vrat” in the Parliament on Donald Trump's statements on CEASEFIRE. Will Modi ji remain silent on the baseless allegations made by Trump on India? @narendramodi ji Nation comes first and we are always with the nation. Trump has imposed 25% Tariff + Penalty on us. This will harm the country's trade; MSMEs and farmers will also be adversely affected. Many industries will suffer heavy losses. Your ministers have been talking about negotiating a trade deal with America for months. Some of them camped in Washington for several days. This is how your friend — “Namaste Trump" and "Abki Baar Trump Sarkar" rewarded our country for your friendship?" Kharge said in a post on X.
"The US President has given the reason for the tariff as - ▫️India's oil import from Russia, ▫️India's purchase of weapons from Russia, ▫️India's membership of BRICS, ▫️BRICS' so-called attack on the US dollar This is a severe blow to India's National Policy of "Strategic Autonomy". History is witness that Non-Alignment has been the foundation of our foreign policy. All governments, irrespective of parties in power, have strengthened friendship with the various countries across the globe, in the interest of India. During the UPA Govt, Dr. Manmohan Singh ji got us Nuclear Waiver from 45 countries including the US. The US supported us. For that, they changed their own law. But India was not bound to take Nuclear Fuel and Material only from the US. Our options were open. Your government's foreign policy has dealt a severe blow to that National Policy," he added.
He also raised question on US-Pakistan oil deal and expressed the concern over "America-China-Pakistan Axis." Instead of worrying about PR, Modi Govt should think about the country.
