NEW DELHI: The government has appointed Dr Abhijat Sheth as the new chairperson of the National Medical Commission (NMC), the apex body for regulating medical education in the country.
He will be replacing Dr B N Gangadhar who offered to relinquish the post several months ago owing to health concerns . Sources said the government had asked Dr Gangadhar to continue until a new appointment was made.
Dr Sheth, whose appointment has been notified, served as president of National Board of Examination in Medical Sciences that conducted NEET-PG exams before this.
Dr Sheth's appointment comes amid allegations of corruption in assessment reports submitted for medical colleges .
