The Mavericks secured the golden opportunity to select Duke phenom and projected top pick, Cooper Flagg, a versatile 6'9" forward who took college basketball by storm in his freshman year. Widely seen as a generational talent, Flagg averaged 19.2 points, 7.5 rebounds, 4.2 assists, and added elite-level defense with 1.4 blocks and 1.2 steals per game. He earned multiple national accolades, including the Naismith Men’s Player of the Year, Wooden Award, and ACC Player and Rookie of the Year.

Blackman spoke glowingly of Flagg, stating, “He can hoop, he can play. There’s a lot of great players in that draft class. … We will see how the guys get together and being able to make our team better which is exactly what we want to do.”

The unexpected news drew immediate reactions across the sports world. NBA legend Dwyane Wade weighed in, writing, “But…… There has been some great players drafted with the 5th pick!”

Further, Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James posted a string of laughing emojis on X: “🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣.” Chiefs quarterback and lifelong Mavs fan Patrick Mahomes chimed in with, “GOOO @dallasmavs.”

Cooper Flagg, who was present at the draft lottery event in Chicago, reflected on the moment: “I didn’t try to think about it too much. I feel like it’s kind of out of my control. I’m just kind of going through the process like everybody else and just trying to enjoy every single moment because we only get to do this once.”
