Autumn can be the perfect time to book a weekend away to relax, unwind and prevent burnout as the days become shorter and a hectic Christmas period quickly approaches. October in particular can provide beautiful orange sunsets, golden coloured trees, crunchy leaves underfoot, and cosy pub fires to cuddle up to. While over summer many of the UK's prettiest villages get overrun with coachloads of tourists, with hundreds filling up cafes and pavements, come autumn it will feel far more peaceful.
With October just around the corner, there is perhaps nowhere more perfect to get that feeling than the New Forest. With acres of bright orange, yellow, and red trees towering into the sky, it can be a lovely place to escape city living, take in some fresh air, and start to unwind. Travel experts at Restless even described the area as Europe's best national park, perfect for an autumn trip.
They added: "From mighty oaks to delicate birches and yellow-specked bracken, the New Forest is Europe's best National Park, and a magical place to enjoy spectacular autumn colours."
They named Denny Wood, one of the region's oldest beech woodlands, a beautiful spot well worth a visit and just 20 minutes away is another beauty.
Taking the short drive, you'll find one village in particular that encompasses all that charm and can be a perfect base for exploring its picturesque surroundings.
Holding the title of 'Britain's Most Beautiful Place to Live' by Leaders Estate Agents, Brockenhurst offers a chance to experience a "proper New Forest Village" with "bundles of charm and history."
A Leaders spokesman added: "The area is home to ponies, deer, donkeys and cows - all of which are known to roam the main street. Locals have the enchanting New Forest at their fingertips, a selection of warm and inviting pubs to enjoy and beautiful views in every direction.
"The countryside around the village is spectacular and Rhinefield Road is one of the prettiest places you could find. This is where you can find the beauty spot, Whitefield Moor. The locals are justly proud of their secret places; the Watersplash Ford and 'Brockenhurst Beach', a swimming spot on the Lymington River."
Brockenhurst is actually the New Forest's largest village, but don't be fooled by the title. With a population of just 3,400, it's still perfect for some peace and quiet.
Despite its size, it still has a thriving high street complete with the award-winning Bakehouse bakery, The Buttery tea room, Village Veg greengrocer, and Commoners restaurant.
There are also two gorgeous churches to explore - one of which is old enough to have been mentioned in the Doomsday Book.
