BBC Breakfast presenter Naga Munchetty clashed with Technology Secretary Peter Kyle about the latest NHS doctors strike. NHS resident doctors confirmed they will be striking for the next five days in a dispute with the British Medical Association.
Peter Kyle said to Naga and Charlie Stayt: "The negotiations didn't fail, we delivered a 28.9% pay rise." Naga jumped into say: "Hold on, we've got a five day resident doctor strike, you have failed."
Kyle was unimpressed as he responded: "We delivered an incredible pay rise for resident doctors last year, our focus is on the patient experience today/ We want to make sure patients are going to get the service they need. Naga chimed in again: "Which they're not going to get today."
Kyle continued: "It's a broken NHS which we are trying to fix, so what we are saying is put the patients first, we think the NHS doctors are being let down by their leadership at the moment.
"We need to give patients the service they deserve and need from a modern day NHS, we're investing in the NHS, in its work force, and investing in getting that NHS off its knees back to service again
"What we can't do is give a 28.9% pay rise and then expect to be given even more on top of it, half way through the first pay rise being implemented
"The resident doctors are being let down by their leadership."
Labour's Health Secretary Wes Streeting has insisted that the NHS will try and resume normal services as senior doctors are stepping in to cover resident doctors who are striking.
In previous strikes, the focus has been on staffing emergency care but Streeting has claimed this time the NHS is striving to keep non-urgent services running.
The British Medical Association has called out Labour as it warned that this risks stretching staff too thinly, saying ministers had every opportunity to stop the walkout.
BBC Breakfast airs weekdays at 6am on BBC1.
