Manchester United have reportedly pulled the plug on talks with Amazon over a blockbuster behind-the-scenes documentary. Secret talks with the streaming platform over an access-all-areas series similar to those at Arsenal and Manchester City are said to have been shelved.
Reports claim that United spent 'several months' discussing a deal with Amazon, whose offer was in excess of £10million. It would have been a record-breaking sum for one of Amazon's 'All Or Nothing' series. Premier League clubs Arsenal, City and Tottenham have previously undergone the microscope. However, it has now been reported that senior executives withdrew from talks earlier in the summer.
According to The Athletic, plans were presented to Ruben Amorim but the United boss was not a fan of the idea. The struggling boss is said to have believed that the timing of the documentary was a bad idea.
Amorim was additionally concerned about the impact intrusion on his first-team squad could have ahead of a hugely important season. The Portuguese coach is under immense to improve on a hugely disappointing campaign in which the Red Devils finished 15th in the Premier League and lost the Europa League final against Tottenham.
Having received Amorim's feedback on the potential Amazon agreement, United's executive committee voted to recommend that the idea was dropped. The documentary will now not take place and the Premier League club will miss out on a huge amount of income.
United's finances have come under scrutiny in recent months, particularly with no European football next season and debts rising to over £700m. In March, minority shareholder Sir Jim Ratcliffe claimed that the club could go bankrupt by Christmas without a range of controversial cost-cutting measures, including 450 staff redudancies.
A major overhaul of United's squad is expected to depend on significant outgoings. Marcus Rashford, Antony, Jadon Sancho and Tyrell Malacia have all been told they can find new clubs.
Matheus Cunha is the only senior arrival at Old Trafford so far, with his £62.5million release clause at Wolves activated. Eighteen-year-old wing-back Diego Leon has also joined from Paraguay, but he is expected to be slowly integrated into Amorim's first-team squad.
Bryan Mbeumo is a target of the 20-time English champions but Brentford are reportedly holding out for in excess of £60m. Talks are said to have stalled after United's second bid of £55m was turned down.
