Jonas Vingegaard's wife has scolded the Visma-Lease-a-Bike cycling team and accused them of overusing the Dane in their quest for another Tour de France triumph. The 28-year-old - who is regarded as one of the premier climbers of his generation - is a two-time Tour de France winner, after earning victories at the annual race in 2022 and 2023.
Having entered the 2025 edition of the race on Saturday, Vingegaard sits second favourite to capture a third win and is just six seconds off current leader Mathieu van der Poel after the opening two stages. Despite an impressive start to proceedings, the cyclist's wife, Trine, has sensationally taken aim at his team Visma - who he's raced for since 2019 - and urged them to stop overworking him which she says is taking him away from their family, with the couple sharing two young children.
Speaking to Danish outlet Politiken, she said: "Knowing Jonas as I do, I'd say Visma is pushing him too far now. I'm afraid he's burning the candle at both ends. I think people sometimes forget the human being behind the athlete - and how to get the best out of him. It could all backfire.
"Jonas doesn't recharge on another three-week altitude camp with the team. He needs to be at home in Denmark, with us, to feel truly himself. He's deeply attached to his routines. Sometimes he needs to reset in the calmest surroundings possible, just with his family. That's a huge part of who he is and why he's successful.
"At one point, we decided to renovate the house together. Jonas realised he could rip out a kitchen, install a new one and lay down wooden flooring. The team wasn't too pleased about that."

Trine claimed that her husband realises the impact his work responsibilities are having on their family life and revealed their decision to have children put a clock on just how much longer he has left in his cycling career. "With two children, he does feel he's missing out on life at home. That has to be weighed against the joy he gets from cycling. In many ways, the countdown to the end of his career began when we had our first child."
In response to Trine's damning comments, Visma's Head of Racing, Grischa Niermann, played down speculation of tension between the two parties, admitting they remain aligned on Jonas' work and home life. "You have to ask her, of course, but I think that's maybe taken a little bit out of proportion," he said.
"We have a very good working together with Jonas, but also with Trine. We always check all this stuff together. We discussed, for example, in the winter that Jonas would not go to altitude camp in February, and that he would stay with the family."
