When it comes to holidays, many of us dream of going to big and iconic cities or paradise destinations that people rave about. But, often when somewhere is highly recommended, our expectations are high - and some find the most popular spots are actually overrated.
In a recent survey, one man, who works for travel company On The Beach, shared which destinations are the "most overrated".
Now in a viral video, shared on TikTok recently, travel expert Rob said: "If you ever wondered what the most overrated holiday destination is, well I asked 150 this exact question and the number one was pretty overwhelming."
Honourable mentionsHe shared the results of some "honourable mentions" first, which included some of Brits' favourite holiday destinations - Ibiza, Marbella and Tenerife landed in the top 2% of votes. Also in the top 2% is Thailand.
Rob said "weirdly" 2.7% of people voted for the UK. "A few people said well, why would we holiday here when it rains? Fair point," he added.
And another Spanish spot also came up on the list; 3.3% of the votes went to Benidorm. Rob, who admits he loves this location, claimed some love it while others "reckon it's all fry ups and stag dos".
Meanwhile, 3.6% of the votes went to Santorini in Greece - which is widely considered one of the most beautiful places in the world thanks to its whitewashed villages and stunning sunsets.
Rob noted people said while it is "gorgeous for photographs", it is "rammed with tourists". People also said it is expensive to eat in Santorini.
Top 5Despite being the most famous city in the world, New York City has landed in the top 4% of the votes. Rob said: "People said it's iconic, but it's also exhausting, chaotic, and insanely expensive."
Landing in fourth place on the list of most overrated holiday spots, according to this survey, with 4.7% of the votes is Bali.
According to Rob, people say it is "not the paradise they expected".
The third place position surprised Rob as it went to Turkey. People noted a lot of the resorts feel similar and people trying to sell things to tourists "feels a bit pushy".
Coming in at number 2 is another one of the most famous cities in the world, Paris. Rob said people described the French capital as "romantic on paper but the reality is dirty streets and long queues which are less than welcoming".
Paris got 6.7% of the vote. However, without question one location ranked by far the most overrated in this list.
Landing in the number one spot is a location adored by celebrities and online personalities. You guessed it, it's Dubai. The United Arab Emirates city got 22.7% of the votes.
Rob said: "People said it's flashy, it's soulless, it's all malls and motorways, it's more Instagram than an authentic experience."
Agreeing with the results, one said: "Been to Dubai and Paris don't really like it." "Cemented my reasoning for never going to Dubai," added another.
Speaking about Bali, one shared: "I actually really agree on Bali. I went in 2018 and was expecting paradise. Just wasn't really like that at all to be honest. Dirty, traffic horrific and just very overhyped."
Disagreeing with the results, one said: "People are doing Paris wrong." One other agreed, writing: "I find it odd that Paris is always in these rankings. I love Paris!"
Another said: "New York is cheap now. The Trump effect. Bali is a dump. Paris is beautiful, but overpriced. Dubai is great and amazing if you are pretentious and shallow."
One said people should swap NYC for Chicago. They explained: "Why go to New York, when Chicago has greater food and has a beach (better in summer). It's smaller, has better shopping and its the Venice of America."
One suggested: "Most votes for Dubai... they haven't even been."
Another wrote: "Dubai is easy to get wrong, I'm not surprised people can find it expensive and soulless... but if you do your homework you can have a completely different experience."
One said they believe Las Vegas is overrated. Explaining, they said: "I'm surprised Vegas isn't on the list. I love it but it's way overpriced for accommodation/food/drink. We found New York much cheaper."
