Prime Minister Narendra Modi may visit Britain by the end of this month. During this, both sides can formally sign the historic India-UK Free Trade Agreement. Ways to enhance bilateral relations in the defense and security sector are expected to be considered.
Diplomatic sources said on Tuesday that both sides are in the process of finalizing the dates of Prime Minister Modi's visit to Britain by the end of July or early August. Earlier, there were indications that British Prime Minister Keir Starmer would visit India first. It is learned that the British Prime Minister may visit India later this year. Sources said that India and Britain are expected to formally sign the free trade agreement during Prime Minister Modi's visit to London.
India and Britain signed an FTA in May.
India and Britain signed a free trade agreement in May, which is expected to benefit 99 percent of Indian exports from tariffs. This will make it easier for British firms to export whiskey, cars, and other products to India. Also, the overall trade basket will get a boost. Along with the FTA, the UK signed the largest FTA since leaving the EU. Prime Minister Modi had described both agreements as historic milestones to catalyze trade, investment, growth, and job creation in both economies and further deepen the India-UK Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. According to officials, the trade agreement finalised after three years of negotiations is expected to ensure wider market access for Indian goods across all sectors. India will benefit from tariff elimination on nearly 99 per cent of tariff lines (product categories), covering almost 100 per cent of trade values.
Discussions are also expected on the implementation of the Technology Security Initiative.
During Modi's visit, the two sides are also expected to explore ways to expand defence and security cooperation. The two sides may also discuss the implementation of the Technology Security Initiative (TSI). In July last year, the two countries finalised the Technology Security Initiative, which sets a bold new vision for cooperation in a number of priority areas, including telecommunications, critical minerals, semiconductors, and artificial intelligence.
