Today, on Ganesh Chaturthi, it is forbidden to look at the moon at night, because according to mythology, doing so is a curse of being falsely accused. This is called 'Mithya Dosh' and to avoid this, one should not look at the moon tonight. If by mistake the moon is seen, then chanting a special mantra or listening to the story of Syamantaka Mani is an effective remedy for removing the dosh.
Ganesh Chaturthi 2025: Today, the great festival of Ganesh Chaturthi is being celebrated with great enthusiasm across the country. Today, 27 August 2025, Wednesday, the 10-day long Ganeshotsav has started. Chants of 'Ganpati Bappa Morya' are echoing in homes and pandals. Devotees are engaged in the worship of their beloved Vighnaharta by establishing him. But amidst this devotion and gaiety, there is an ancient belief which is followed especially tonight - and that is not to see the moon.
It is believed that if a person sees the moon on the night of Shukla Paksha Chaturthi of Bhadrapada month, i.e. today, then he is accused of false accusation or 'Kalank', which means that he is falsely accused of something that he never did. This is why this Chaturthi is also called 'Kalank Chaturthi'.
Know the mythological story in detail: Why did Ganesha curse Chandra Dev?This story is mentioned in the Puranas. Once, Lord Ganesha was travelling at night on his vehicle mouse after having his favourite modaks and laddoos. His stomach was full of laddoos. As he was going, his mouse saw a snake on the way and jumped in fear. This sudden movement caused Ganesha to lose his balance and fall to the ground. Due to the fall, there was pressure on his stomach, and his stomach burst, due to which all the laddoos spilled out. Ganesha immediately got up and put all the laddoos back in his stomach and caught a snake, and tied it to his waist.
Chandra Dev, who was roaming in the sky, was watching this whole scene. Seeing this form of Ganesh Ji, he could not stop his laughter, and out of arrogance, he started laughing loudly. He ridiculed Ganesh Ji's stomach, trunk, and his fall.
Bal Ganesh became very angry on seeing himself being mocked. He said to Chandra Dev, "O Chandra! You are so proud of your beauty and coolness that you are mocking others after seeing their pain. I curse you that from today, you will decay, your beauty will turn black, and all your skills will be destroyed. Whoever sees you on today's tithi will also be disgraced like you and will have to face humiliation in society."
Due to the effect of the curse, Chandra Dev immediately started turning black, and his light started fading away. Frightened, he and all other gods pleaded for forgiveness from Lord Ganesha. Then Ganesha was pleased and said that the curse cannot be taken back completely, but he can limit its effect. He gave a boon that the phases of the moon will decrease for 15 days of the month (Krishna Paksha) and increase for 15 days (Shukla Paksha). But the curse of the day of Bhadrapada Shukla Chaturthi will always be remembered, and anyone who sees you on this day will have to bear the false stigma.
What is the forbidden time for not seeing the moon tonight? (Chandrama Darshan Timings)According to the Panchang, Chaturthi Tithi started yesterday i.e. 26th August afternoon, but according to Uday Tithi, the festival is being celebrated today. It is forbidden to see the moon tonight.
- Forbidden time: It is considered inauspicious to see the moon from 09:15 AM to 09:28 PM today. (Please note that this time may vary slightly in different cities, but special caution should be taken after sunset.)
If you happen to see the moon tonight by mistake, there is no need to panic. Some infallible remedies have been mentioned in the scriptures to get rid of this defect:
1.Listen or read the story of Syamantaka Mani: The most important remedy is to listen or read the story of Syamantaka Mani related to Lord Shri Krishna. It is said that Lord Krishna also saw the moon on this day, after which he was falsely accused of stealing the Mani. Later, when he proved his innocence, he was freed from this stigma. Just by listening to this story, the sin of Chandra Darshan ends.
2. Chant this infallible mantra: If it is not possible to read the story, then chant this simple mantra at least 108 times. This mantra is the essence of the same story:
3. Singh:- सिंह: प्रसेनमवधीत्सिंहो जाम्बवता हतः. सुकुमारक मा रोदीस्तव ह्येष स्यमन्तकः॥
Prasenamvadhitsingho jambvata hatah. Sukumaraak ma rodistav hyesh syamantakah.
4. Meaning: "The lion killed Prasen and the same lion was killed by Jambavan. O tender child! Do not cry now, this Syamantaka Mani is yours."
5. Donation of fruits or curd: It is believed that donating sweet fruits or curd-honey to a needy person also reduces the effect of the dosha.
Today, on this holy festival, remain immersed in the devotion of Ganpati Bappa and keeping in mind this ancient tradition, avoid seeing the moon.
Happy Ganesh Chaturthi!
