As well as the head-scratching case they need to crack, the Netflix film focuses on the friendship between Elizabeth Best (played by Helen Mirren), Ron Ritchie (Pierce Brosnan), Ibrahim Arif (Ben Kingsley) and Joyce Meadowcroft (Celia Imrie).
There was also clearly a real-life friendship among the stars as Kingsley and Mirren shared during The Thursday Murder Club: An Evening with Richard Osman at The British Library.
The actors revealed that a staggering 58 years had passed since the pair worked in theatre together and it was an emotional experience when they reunited.
Kingsley expressed: “I was very touched when Helen and I met again for the read-through because Helen burst into tears.
“I was very touched. A lovely reunion."
Mirren explained: "Our work takes us off constantly and Ben and I started out in the theatre together at the same age, with the same ambition of being serious classical actors.
“Then Ben went off and had the amazing career he has had and I went off and did my thing.
“And now we are back together again.”
Mirren hasn’t just previously worked with the 81-year-old Gandhi actor though.
The Queen actress also has a connection to actress Imrie as they both starred in the 2003 comedy-drama film Calendar Girls.
They play two women involved in a charitable institution but when Annie’s (Julie Walters) husband is diagnosed with leukaemia, a group of friends decide to pose nude for a calendar that raises funds for the local hospital.
More recently, the 80-year-old actress starred opposite Brosnan as his on-screen wife Maeve Harrigan in the Paramount+ crime drama Mobland which has been renewed for season two.
The Thursday Murder Club premieres on Friday, August 22, in cinemas and on Thursday, August 28, on Netflix.
