Olympic swimming champion Adam Peaty has shared the hilarious story behind the botched plans for his engagement to Holly Ramsay.
While on Luke Hamnett's Live Laugh Luke podcast, the triple gold medallist opened up about how a series of mishaps turned what was meant to be a romantic evening into a comedy of errors.
Adam recalled: “I asked Gordon and Tana for their permission to marry. It was very emotional. It was like 20 minutes. We were in Cornwall just us three and I cried. They cried. Had a few hugs. And here we are.”

The 29-year-old swimmer, who met Holly on Strictly Come Dancing in 2021, explained that after receiving Gordon Ramsay's blessing, he planned to propose to his girlfriend during a romantic getaway in Greece — but things didn't exactly go to plan.
He told Luke: “Mate, this is a funny story. So one night at dinner, I'd been to this restaurant before — it's really nice. You have this quiet area, and it was two restaurants that sounded the same and looked the same. It was all in Greek. I was like, 'oh it must be the right one'. I'd booked the wrong one.”
So instead of the intimate evening he'd envisaged, Adam found himself surrounded by a bustling crowd. “It couldn’t be busier,” he laughed.
“I'm not one of those people to get engaged and everyone claps and whatever. And I'd booked this wrong restaurant so I was like okay, got to do it after.”
In an attempt to salvage the night, Adam went out in hunt of a picturesque backdrop for his proposal. “Ooo there’s a lovely castle over there,” he remembered thinking. “Went around, I s**t you not, two abandoned cars, three dead cats, four chickens just roaming around. I was like 'f**k me, I can't do it here’.”
In the end, Adam just brought Holly back to the private villa they were staying in. He added: “Put on a nice classical playlist and that's when I did it. Just got on one knee.”
When Luke asked if he cried, the Olympian admitted: “Oh mate. I cry at anything. I guarantee you on the wedding day I'll be crying all day.” Holly Ramsay, who is celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay's daughter, announced her engagement to Adam last September.
She shared the happy news on Instagram, gushing: “I am marrying my best friend. I truly cannot put into words how I am feeling right now.” Adam wrote back: “I can't believe you're going to be my wife. I'm truly the luckiest man on earth to have such a gentle, caring and beautiful woman by my side.”
The couple's engagement was part of a turning point in Adam's life. The athlete has admitted to struggling with his mental health and alcoholism after the 2022 Commonwealth Games.
He has credited both Holly and her father Gordon with helping him to rebuild himself both personally and professionally after this dark time. Holly and Adam are planning to tie the knot during the 2025 Christmas season.
