Manchester United co-owners Ineos are said to be concerned that Ruben Amorim will choose to resign before being sacked in a bid to save his managerial reputation. The Portuguese head coach has struggled at Old Trafford since being appointed in November 2024 and scrutiny is growing on him.
Amorim led United to the Europa League final last season but they lost to Tottenham Hotspur in Bilbao. They also finished in a woeful 16th to ensure they comfortably finished outside the European places, recording their worst-ever finish of the Premier League era in the process.
The 2025-26 campaign has not started well, either. Despite beating Chelsea prior to Saturday's trip to Brentford, Amorim's men have slumped to three league defeats and were also dumped out of the Carabao Cup by League Two Grimsby Town.

In total, Amorim has led United to just 19 victories out of 49 matches, leading to serious questions over his future. The i Paper though, say Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Ineos are willing to stick by their manager. It is claimed the British billionaire is eager to stick to his long-term outlook on United and they do not want to lunge into another sacking.
However, there are fears around the club that Ineos will have no say in the matter, with the report adding that some insiders believe Amorim will almost definitely walk away from United before he is given the sack by Ratcliffe as he is becoming worn down by the constant criticism following defeats. The United chief is thought to consider these to be 'knee-jerk' reactions and he is shocked by the scrutiny that has grown on him during his reign.

Despite all the speculation around the future of Amorim, there is believed to be no replacement being lined up yet for the Portuguese head coach. No managers are thought to have been contacted by United to replace Amorim although Ratcliffe remains an admirer of Gareth Southgate following his impressive stint with the England national team.
United return to action this Saturday when they host high-flying Sunderland at Old Trafford.
