Inside Jose Mourinho's powerful first Benfica team talk - 'We are going to kill them'

Jose Mourinho got off to a winning start back at Benfica in his first match after being re-appointed by the Portuguese side. Mourinho returned to Benfica last week, almost 25 years after his departure from the club.

After having just a couple of days to work with his new side, Benfica were in Liga Portugal action on Saturday as they travelled to take on bottom of the table AVS. A goal from Heorhiy Sudakov in first half added time put Benfica in the lead.

Benfica were able to extend their lead further in the second half through a Vangelis Pavlidis penalty and a goal from Franjo Ivanovic as they secured a 3-0 victory. The win means that Benfica are in second place in the table, five points behind leaders Porto but with a game in hand.

While Mourinho didn’t have too long on the training pitch to prepare for the game, the former Chelsea, Manchester United and Tottenham manager had a positive impact on his new team. The 62-year-old's pre-match team talk certainly looked to have inspired his players.

Following the game, Benfica’s official Instagram channel shared Mourinho's message, giving a rare insight into the dressing room. “Winning at Benfica is beautiful,” he said.

“Playing at Benfica is f***ing tough. Losing at Benfica is f***ing tough. Winning at Benfica is f***ing beautiful.

“We've talked a lot, now we're going there, now we're going in there, and we're going to kill them.” After the speech, Mourinho gave high fives to his squad. Club captain Nicolas Otamendi then spoke.

“The only thing that matters at this club is getting three points and winning titles,” he said. “It's the only thing that matters. One for all, all for one, Benfica!”

Mourinho challenged his players to get better after picking up his first win: “I said we had to go in with a winning attitude, and confidence levels were high in the second half. I just had to release the boys.”

“I told them at the end of the game, 'it was good, but nothing extraordinary,'” he added. Benfica are back in action again on Tuesday night when they host Rio Av. It will be Mourinho’s first home game in charge of his new club.

They then have another home game against third-place Gil Vicente on Friday night (8.15pm kick-off). Mourinho returns to his former club, Chelsea, in just under a week’s time as the two clubs face each other in the Champions League at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday, 30 September (8pm kick-off).
