After Storm Florris drenched much of the UK this month with heavy rain and gale-force winds, many of us were reminded just how unpredictable British summer weather can be. At times like this, to avoid getting soaked on dog walks or while running errands, having a reliable waterproof jacket is a must.
Generally, my coat collection is pretty impractical - there’s scarcely a hood in sight and the fabrics are mostly faux fur or cord. So when the weather does require a sensible option, the one I reach for time and again is my TOG24 Alva Women's Waterproof Jacket.
This was TOG24’s first-ever trench coat style, launched in 2024, and it quickly became a standout in their collection. This coat has been my go-to for nearly a year, and for good reason.

Available in timeless taupe, black and khaki, it’s a smart, practical piece that easily transitions from countryside to city life. And the best part? It’s now on sale. Originally priced at £170, it's now down to £119 at Debenhams, and in my opinion, worth every penny.
With it, shoppers get all the hallmarks of a traditional trench, like the cinched waist and storm flap. But it also has added practical perks like adjustable waist toggles, a removable hood and taped seams for waterproofing - not to mention incredibly deep pockets.
The jacket is both windproof and waterproof, making it ideal for navigating fickle forecasts. It's breathable and lightweight, which means it’s perfect for layering in cooler months or wearing solo when things warm up.
Elsewhere, the Alaskan 3 in 1 Long Jacket provides full weather protection. With a versatile style, it features a removable padded inner for added warmth on colder days and a waterproof outer with taped seams and an adjustable hood to keep you protected in heavy rain. It’s currently reduced to £129, down from £219.
Meanwhile, the Orla Kiely Mac II, now £52 down from £130, from Regatta, adds effortless style to your outdoor getup. The waterproof and breathable Isotex 10000 peached polyester fabric keeps you dry and comfortable on the go.
I haven’t tested either of these, but if you're after something proven, the TOG24 Alva continues to be a wardrobe hero, including in Storm Florris, where it kept me dry. Several other shoppers have also loved the trench coat.

One reviewer said: “This jacket is exactly what I was looking for - really flattering shape, warm without being heavy at all, windproof, great length. I just love it. Such a nice colour too. I’m often between 2 sizes and I went for the smaller one.”
“What a fabulous, fabulous coat,” wrote a third. “I actually got to wear it during that awful Storm Bert where it just didn’t stop raining and the flooding began. What a test for the coat that was, and it did what it said on the tin, so to speak - that was - it kept me warm and dry. Well pleased. I purchased a size 12 as I upped the size because I thought that the chances are it would indeed be more of a winter coat, which would be worn with thick jumpers and other layers too, so I wanted it to fit comfortably, which it does.”
That said, petite shoppers might want to try before they buy as it’s on the longer side, which adds elegance but might swamp shorter frames. One added: “This is a lovely coat, however, the style did not suit my shape. Being 5ft 2", the coat was very long and full at the bottom, so it drowned me. I even sized down but still had the same issue.”
Another penned: “Lovely jacket, I'm only 5ft 1 so it was too long for me. Sizing is big, so size down. Very trendy. I sent it back as it just wasn't for me personally.”
While we’re optimistic about warmer weather, it’s always good to be prepared—especially ahead of autumn. TheTOG24 Alva trenchis on sale at Debenhams.
