The UAE's victory over Bangladesh in the second T20 match at Sharjah on May 19 will be remembered as a historic moment in cricket. Not only did the UAE clinch a thrilling 2-wicket win, but they also accomplished five remarkable feats in the process. After losing the first T20 by 27 runs, UAE had the chance to suffer the same fate again. However, this time, the UAE players turned the tables and secured victory with just one ball to spare. The star of this sensational win was UAE captain Mohammad Wasim.

Leadership Reflects in Team’s Pride

It’s often said that a team’s success or failure hinges on its captain’s leadership. The second T20I between Bangladesh and UAE perfectly exemplified this. Mohammad Wasim led from the front, opening the batting and chasing down the massive target set by Bangladesh with a blend of skill and aggressive intent. His innings kept the UAE firmly in the hunt until victory was well within reach.

Mohammad Wasim’s Crucial Contribution

Batting first, Bangladesh posted a formidable total of 205 for 5 in 20 overs. In response, Wasim scored a brilliant 82 runs off 42 balls, striking at an impressive rate of 195.23, which included 9 fours and 5 sixes. When he was dismissed at 14.5 overs, the UAE was on 148 runs, still needing 52 runs to win. The rest of the team then rallied to close out the game. Mohammad Wasim’s exceptional performance earned him the Player of the Match award.

Five Historic Achievements by UAE

While the win itself was thrilling, the UAE also set five significant records:

  • First-ever T20I victory over Bangladesh: This marked the UAE’s maiden win against Bangladesh in the T20 format.
  • Highest successful chase by an associate team against a full member: Chasing 206 runs, UAE became the first associate nation to achieve such a high target against a full ICC member side in T20 internationals.
  • First time UAE chased 200+ runs in a T20I: This match marked the UAE’s highest successful chase in the shortest format.
  • Breaking a 29-year wait for an international cricket win over Bangladesh: Although UAE had defeated Bangladesh in ODI matches during the 1994 ICC Trophy and 1996 World Cup qualifiers, this victory was their first against Bangladesh in international cricket in nearly three decades in the T20 format.
  • Series leveled: This win helped UAE tie the two-match T20I series against Bangladesh.
