In a disturbing incident involving a 12-year-old boy who was allegedly assaulted by a man inside the lift of a residential building in Ambernath on July 4, police apprehended the accused on Friday. He was produced before the court and has been sent to judicial custody. A video of the assault has gone viral on social media.
The accused, identified as Kailash Tanwani (37), works as an agent for a denim jeans firm in Ulhasnagar and lives with his wife and son at Patel Realty in Ambernath East. The victim also resides in the same building with his parents on the 14th floor.
The incident occurred around 5 PM when the boy was headed to his tuition class. According to the police and CCTV footage, the boy entered the lift and pressed the button to descend. The lift stopped on the 9th floor, where Tanwani and a female housekeeper entered. The accused suddenly began abusing the boy, slapped him multiple times, and even attempted to bite him. The child managed to fend off the biting attempt.
Although the boy immediately informed his parents and they approached the Shivaji Nagar police station, only a non-cognizable (NC) offence was initially registered.
The victim’s father, Shankarlal Pandey, said, “My son was going to his tuition class when the accused suddenly assaulted him in the lift and continued beating him even after reaching the lobby, despite the watchman’s attempts to intervene. The accused also threatened my son.”
A female housekeeper who witnessed the incident confirmed that Tanwani beat the child inside the lift and again in the lobby. “I tried to stop him. I asked why he didn’t inform the child’s parents if something was wrong. He still didn’t stop,” she said.
Following public outrage over the viral video, the Shivaji Nagar police registered an FIR on July 8 under relevant Sections 118(1), 115(2), 131, 351(2), and 352 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
