MI New York went on a roll in the playoffs to win the championship on Monday after having qualified with just three wins in 10 league matches of the US' Major League Cricket (MLC). The team clutched at the right moment to win the Eliminator, Challenger and the final.
In the final against Washington Freedom, MINY held their nerves to registered a close five-wicket victory. Youngster Rushil Ugarkar sealed the match for his team, defending 12 runs in the last over against the international stars Glenn Maxwell and Glenn Phillips. The 22-year-old showed remarkable composure and mixed his pace brilliantly to finish the job for his team.
Defending 181, Trent Boult had provided a strong start with the ball, reducing Freedom to 0/2 in the first over. Rachin Ravindra (70) and Jack Edwards (33) fought back to keep their team in the chase. Phillips’ late attack threatened to tilt the game again but MINY managed to hold their nerves Boult’s spell (2/22) and Rushil’s superb final over proved decisive.
Earlier, MINY had posted 180 for 7 after a flying start from Quinton de Kock (77 off 46) and Monank Patel. Despite a middle-order wobble, a useful contribution from Kunwarjeet Singh pushed the score past 175.
Kieron Pollard was full of emotion after the win. “Everyone wrote us off. But there’s something in this franchise. The belief was unbelievable,” said the MINY captain.
MI franchise now has a hat-trick in 2025. After winning the SA20 and the WPL earlier this year, they now have the MLC trophy in the cabinet.
It’s the 13th major trophy across leagues for the Mumbai Indians group.
