Still searching for his first victory as West Ham United manager, Nuno Espirito Santo will once again attempt to break his winless streak when Newcastle United visit the London Stadium for Sunday’s Premier League clash. The Hammers, currently mired in crisis, are at risk of suffering a fourth consecutive top-flight defeat, while their buoyant visitors are aiming for a fourth straight win across all competitions.
Regardless of the outcome in gameweek 10, West Ham are guaranteed to remain in the Premier League relegation zone. With just four points amassed so far—courtesy of the combined efforts of Graham Potter and Santo—the club is staring down the prospect of relegation to the Championship. Santo’s only point came in his debut match, a 1-1 draw away at Everton. Since then, the former Conference League winners have fallen to Arsenal, Brentford, and most recently, newly-promoted Leeds United.
Their latest setback was sealed within the first 15 minutes at Elland Road last Friday, as early goals from Brenden Aaronson and Joe Rodon left West Ham trailing, with only a Mateus Fernandes consolation to show for their efforts. The Hammers now sit 19th in the table, four points adrift of safety.
Never before have West Ham collected as few as four points from their opening nine Premier League matches—their previous worst was five in 2006-07—and they now risk setting an unwanted club record. A defeat on Sunday would mark the first time in their history that they have lost eight of their first 10 league games. Given their defensive woes—a league-high 20 goals conceded—such an outcome is far from unlikely.
While West Ham have already shipped 20 goals in the 2025-26 Premier League campaign, Newcastle’s matches have been far less eventful in front of goal. The Magpies are one of only two teams—alongside Aston Villa—to have both scored and conceded fewer than 10 goals in the league so far, with nine scored and eight conceded. This reflects both their solid defensive organization and, at times, a lack of attacking flair. However, Eddie Howe’s men have been anything but uninspiring in recent weeks, enjoying five victories from their last six matches in all competitions. Their current winning streak includes triumphs over Benfica in the Champions League, Fulham in the Premier League, and most recently, Tottenham Hotspur in the EFL Cup.
It’s worth noting, however, that all three of those wins came at St James’ Park. Newcastle are yet to secure an away victory in the Premier League this season—a fate shared only with West Ham, Wolverhampton Wanderers, and Nottingham Forest among the bottom three. Including last season, the Magpies’ winless run on the road in the league now stands at seven matches. Despite this, Newcastle have not lost in their last six visits to the London Stadium, with their last defeat there coming in 2019.
