Man Utd get triple injury update ahead of Arsenal Premier League opener

Manchester United have been handed a triple injury update ahead of their Premier League opener against Arsenal on August 17.

The two sides will meet in the first game of the season, and could both field rather different starting XIs to their final games of last season after busy transfer windows. For Arsenal, new arrivals Kepa Arrizabalaga, Christian Norgaard, Christhian Mosquera, Noni Madueke, Martin Zubimendi and Viktor Gyokeres will all be vying to be involved.

Meanwhile, United have signed young left-back Diego Leon, Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo. Both sides have a number of injury concerns to contend with as well, though. For United, Lisandro Martinez is poised to return to light training with the club.

Martinez suffered a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee during the clash with Crystal Palace on February 2 and is now progressing through his rehabilitation alongside his teammates in the United States.

The 27-year-old has completed some individual ball work and outdoor running sessions at the Endeavor Health Performance Center in Chicago but remains unavailable for full team training.

Andre Onana and Joshua Zirkzee are also back working on the grass as they recover from their respective injuries.

A source has told the Manchester Evening News that Onana, who picked up a hamstring strain during training last month, has been 'throwing himself around' in training sessions, though only in non-contact exercises.

Onana could feature in United's final pre-season friendly against Fiorentina at Old Trafford on August 9, eight days before their opening Premier League fixture.

United have been exploring the market for a new goalkeeper and saw a loan bid for Emiliano Martinez turned down by Aston Villa earlier this summer.

Zirkzee picked up a minor injury at the beginning of pre-season and was unavailable for United's matches against Leeds United, West Ham United and Bournemouth.

The 24-year-old was hastily brought back from a hamstring problem to feature in the Europa League final loss to Tottenham in Bilbao but Zirkzee suffered a separate injury a fortnight ago.

"I've got a small injury but it shouldn't take too long to recover now," Zirkzee said in midweek.

"I've got great physios working with me every day.

"It's not a serious problem. It's pre-season so unlike last season where I wanted to push myself to be back for the final, obviously now I just want to be there for the start of the season."

Arsenal have been handed their own a triple injury boost ahead of the first game of the season.

Mikel Artetabelieves Gabriel Magalhaes, Riccardo Calafiori and Jurrien Timber should be ready for the start of the season.

"I don't think so," he said when asked about injury doubts after Thursday's pre-season friendly defeat to Tottenham Hotspur. "If they evolve like they've been involved in the last few days, so Gabriel Magalhaes, Calafiori and Timber, the three of them will be available."
